How to Measure Yourself

Accurate measurements are the foundation of clothing that fits — and the confidence that comes with it. Take your time, follow each step, and measure twice. Your body will thank you.

Before You Start

What to Wear

Wear form-fitting clothes or just your underwear. Most importantly, wear the bra you plan to wear with the finished garment — it significantly affects bust and torso measurements.

Tools You Need

  • A soft, flexible measuring tape — we'll send you one for free
  • A mirror to check tape placement
  • A piece of narrow elastic or ribbon (for finding your waist)
Measuring tools: tape, mirror, elastic, notebook

Bring a Friend

The best measurements come from a second pair of hands. Ask a friend to hold the tape while you stand naturally — it's faster, more accurate, and honestly more fun.

Our iOS app supports LiDAR body scanning if your phone has a depth sensor, but even then, the best results come when a friend walks around you with the phone while you hold still.

Posture

Stand naturally and relaxed. Don't hold your breath, suck in your stomach, or puff out your chest. We're making this for your real body — that only works if the measurements are honest.

Correct posture for measuring Incorrect posture — leaning forward

General Tips

  • Measure twice — record once
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight; you should be able to slip a finger underneath
  • For circumference measurements, keep the tape parallel to the floor
  • Always measure on bare skin or over thin, close-fitting fabric
  • Record measurements in the same unit system throughout
Correct tape tension Incorrect tape tension — too tight
Tape level and parallel to floor Tape not level — tilted

Torso Circumferences

How to measure: Bust

Bust

bust_circ

Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Wear the bra you plan to wear with the garment.

Tip: Don't pull the tape tight — it should be snug but you should be able to slip a finger underneath.
How to measure: Underbust

Underbust

lowbust_circ

Measure directly under your bust, where the band of your bra sits. Keep the tape snug and level.

Tip: This measurement determines your band size and cup depth.
How to measure: Waist

Waist

waist_circ

Find your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button. Bend to the side to find the crease.

Tip: Tie a piece of elastic around your middle and let it settle. It will naturally find your waist.
How to measure: Hip

Hip

hip_circ

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, usually 7-9 inches below your waist.

Tip: Stand with feet together. The tape should pass over the widest point of your hip bones.
How to measure: High Hip

High Hip

highhip_circ

Measure around your hip bones, above the fullest part of your hips but below your waist.

Tip: This is roughly 3-4 inches below your waist.

Front & Back Arcs

How to measure: Front Bust Arc

Front Bust Arc

bust_arc_f

From side seam to side seam across the front of your bust. This is half of your bust circumference, measured at the front.

Tip: Have a helper mark your side seam points first.
How to measure: Back Bust Arc

Back Bust Arc

bust_arc_b

From side seam to side seam across your back at bust level.

Tip: Your front and back arcs should add up to your full bust circumference.
How to measure: Front Waist Arc

Front Waist Arc

waist_arc_f

From side seam to side seam across the front at your natural waist.

Tip: Keep the tape level and don't compress.
How to measure: Back Waist Arc

Back Waist Arc

waist_arc_b

From side seam to side seam across the back at waist level.

How to measure: Front Hip Arc

Front Hip Arc

hip_arc_f

From side seam to side seam across the front at the fullest hip.

How to measure: Back Hip Arc

Back Hip Arc

hip_arc_b

From side seam to side seam across the back at the fullest hip.

Vertical Lengths

How to measure: Front Neck to Waist

Front Neck to Waist

neck_front_to_waist_f

From the hollow of your throat (front neck point) straight down to your natural waist.

Tip: Keep the tape flat against your body, following the contour.
How to measure: Back Neck to Waist

Back Neck to Waist

neck_back_to_waist_b

From the prominent bone at the back of your neck (C7 vertebra) down to your waist.

Tip: Tilt your head forward to find the prominent bone.
How to measure: Armpit to Waist

Armpit to Waist

armpit_to_waist_side

From the crease of your armpit straight down to your waist on the side.

Tip: Keep your arm relaxed at your side.
How to measure: Waist to Hip

Waist to Hip

height_waist_side_to_hip

From your natural waist straight down to the fullest part of your hip, measured at the side.

How to measure: Shoulder Length

Shoulder Length

shoulder_length

From the side of your neck (where a necklace would sit) to the tip of your shoulder bone.

Tip: You should feel the bony point of your shoulder at the end.

Rise & Crotch

How to measure: Front Rise

Front Rise

rise_length_f

Sit on a hard flat surface. Measure from your waist at the front, down through the crotch, to the surface you're sitting on.

Tip: Sitting compresses the measurement. Stand for a more relaxed fit, sit for a closer fit.
How to measure: Back Rise

Back Rise

rise_length_b

Same as front rise, but measured at the back — from waist down to the sitting surface.

Tip: The back rise is typically longer than the front.
How to measure: Side Rise

Side Rise

rise_length_side

From your waist at the side, down to the sitting surface.

How to measure: Full Crotch Length

Full Crotch Length

crotch_length

From your waist at the front, through the crotch, and up to your waist at the back. This is the full crotch curve.

Tip: Use a flexible tape and follow the body closely.

Bustpoint

How to measure: Apex to Apex

Apex to Apex

bustpoint_to_bustpoint

Distance between your two bust apex points (nipple to nipple).

Tip: Wear the bra you plan to wear with the garment.
How to measure: Bustpoint to Neck

Bustpoint to Neck

bustpoint_to_neck_side

From the bust apex up to the side of your neck (where a strap would sit).

Tip: This determines strap placement and cup height.
